Buying A Hard Drive

The hard drive (or hard disk as some people call it) is another crucial component of your computer. While your cpu and motherboard and sound cards and video cards determines how fast your computer works, it is your hard drive that will determine just how much your computer will be able to store.

Now there are usually two reasons for buying a new hard drive. The first is that your current hard drive is broken or corrupted and cannot be saved, or you need more space. If it's the latter then I would recommend that you simply add another hard drive into your system. I would do this for many reasons. The first is that it's much more convenient than having to reinstall your entire operation systems, all the programs and applications as well as restoring all the files in your first hard drive. The second reason is that you'll get extra space on top of what you already have. And finally, it's really not at all difficult to install a second hard disk. Most computer casings these days are even able to store up to 4 hard drives!

The next thing is, how do you know what to buy? Well the first question is, how big should your hard drive be? Well, hard drives are basically measured in Gigabytes (GB) and in the past having a 1 GB hard drive was deemed to be a lot. These days though standard computers contain 40 to 80 GB worth of space! It seems to be a lot when your operating system only requires 4 GB worth of hard disk space.

So why would you buy such a large hard disk? Well I guess the next thing you have to ask yourself is, what will you be using the computer for? You see, part of the space on your hard drive is used to store computer programs. And these programs and applications are just getting bigger and bigger every year. This means that you'll need more hard disk space to run your programs.

The other reason for needing a lot of space is to store data. Whether they are work related or entertainment files (such as videos or songs) for your personal enjoyment you will need space to store them. So consider how many files you intend to store before buying your hard drive. If for example you're buying a second hard drive for storage then obviously the bigger the better.

The next thing about buying your hard drive is that you have to know the kind of hard drive that your motherboard supports. You'll also have to find out the type of file system that your operating system uses. Assuming you have Microsoft Windows XP installed on your computer, you should probably look for either an EIDE or SATA drive. If you're not sure you can always check with the store's salesperson and they'll help you find something that is compatible.
