Build Your Own Computer Network
Whether you have a bunch of computers at home or at the office, it is just so much easier to network them all. Data transfer and file sharing is made so much more convenient that way, and not to mention, you won't have to take turns using the internet anymore or complain that someone is hoarding that lone modem. With a network connection and a router, you can all be online at the same time.
The first part to installing your own computer network is to buy a few things and to make sure that you have what you need to set it up. The following is just a simple checklist for your own reference on what you will need:
- A router or a wireless router (depending on what you like). It can also be known as an access point or a base station.
- A network adapter or a network card for each computer or laptop that you intend to connect into the network.
- Get some Ethernet cables and make sure that they are long enough to connect from your router to the computer. You won't need this if you are building a wireless network of course.
And now that you have what you need here is how to set up your very own network of computers:
- Connect your router to the modem or directly into the phone line.
- Install all the network adapters or cards into your computers. Once that is done, turn the computers on and make sure that all the drivers are installed as well.
- If you're not building a wireless computer network, connect all the computers to the router using the Ethernet cables.
- After you turn your router on your computer should be able to ‘see' it. If there are any problems with this you should take a look at the manual and see if there is anything you need to install into your computer.
- Once all the computers are able to ‘see' the router you should all be connected on a simple computer network.
